SANTORINI CHURCES

Places to visit in Santorini, NOW with a multitude of cultural attractions and an imaginative way of relaunching themselves, Santorini villages have the latest years captured the worlds interest. SO DO THEIR CHURCHES !!

Santorini is famous for the much photographed blue domed and colorful churches, with our team you can explore unrivaled treasures and hidden cliffs capturing timeless moments.

Each church bears witness to a unique history and has a feast to celebrate, upon which great festivals take place in the villages.

The churches of Santorini, although very much part of the cubist architectural style, show a western influence in their relative large size.

The volcano’s eruption and the catastrophic earthquakes the shattered the island from time to time strengthened the religious fervor of the locals.

Thus before the 1956 earthquake, the island boasted some 260 churches. Nowadays there are about 500, most of them are private and open their gates only at their celebration date (once per year).

The most well known churches are the Orthodox Cathedral at the centre of Fira that is the largest church of the island, the Catholic Cathedral dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, the famous church of Panagia Episkopi that was built during the Byzantine times, the Agios Nikolaos Monastery between the villages of Firostefani and Imerovigli, the chapel of Panagia Katefiani that is on a hillside above Perissa beach, the Monastery of Prophet Elias at the highest point of the island with all around view of Santorini, and of course the breathtaking churches of Oia village, there are so many and extremely picturesque that lay down the black rock and the cave houses.
